Ich fertige Ostracoden aus einer Mischung aus Porzellan und Papier (Paperclay) im Maßstab zwischen 150:1 und 300:1.
Als Vorlage dienen mir eine Vielzahl an mikroskopischen Aufnahmen.
Der Charakter ihrer jeweiligen Oberflächenstruktur wird erfasst und individuell in Form gebracht. Jedes modellierte Stück ist ein Einzelstück, welches in einem aufwändigen Prozess hergestellt wird. Nachdem die zweiteilige Form modelliert und zusammen-
gefügt ist, wird sie während 2-3 Wochen schonend getrocknet, damit keine Risse entstehen. Nun wird sie auf 1020°C vorge-
brannt, glasiert und anschließend noch einmal auf 1250°C gebrannt. Auf Wunsch kann auch mit Farbe oder Gold gear-
beitet werden. Dies bedingt einen dritten Brand bei 800°C.
Insgesamt dauert der Herstellungsprozess ca. 5-6 Wochen. Der Preis variiert, je nachdem, wie aufwändig und fein strukturiert die Oberfläche des Modells ist, zwischen 250.- und 400.- Euro.

I handcraft ostracods from a mixture of porcelain and paper (Paper Clay) in a scale between 150:1 and 300:1. Scanning electron microscope images and light microscope images from ostracods serve me as guides through the fantastic world of ostracods.
The variety of surface structures and shape is recorded individually. Each piece is uniquely handcrafted in a complex and labour-intensive process. After each valve is formed, they are fused and it will need 2-3 weeks to dry it gently, so that no cracks ruin the OSTRACODAporzellan. Now, it will be fired at a low 1020°C, glazed and then fired at 1250°C. When valves are to be coloured or decorated with gold, they are placed in the oven for a third time at 800°C.
Overall, the whole process takes about 5-6 weeks. The price per piece varies between 250 and 400 Euros, depending on how sophisticated and finely structured the surface of the model is or has to be.
